Youre not looking at two images here by accident: both of these are Extra Old. The one on the right is the new blueprint introduced perhaps a year or so ago, and what I bought was the one on the left. Theres some confusion in the literature as to what youre getting: the one on the right is supposedly 15 year old blends, while the one on the left is stated on some websites to be 7, 8 and 10 years old blended togetherwhat the hell? However, after having contacted Mount Gays customer service (in France, because Rémy Cointreau has owned the brand since ), I can now tell you that both blends are exactly the same a combination of year old rums and the bottle on the right is merely a newer, more premium design, which is in line with my observation that rums are now moving upscale in both blending and plan (see the Elements 8 review if you doubt me).
Mount Gay is the rum from Barbados that essentially after tourism, I guess makes the islands name. Not everyone has heard of Doorlys, or Mahikis or St. N
Mount Gay Extra Old or XO as they sound to have re-branded it. For those in the know Mount Gay Extra Old is often famous as MGXO. The XO notation on the Mount Gay is pretty usual across the rum and spirits industry to denote an aged spirit (without actually noting how aged it is!).
As the Mount Gay Distillery is the oldest official distillery in the world established as the label denotes, I dont think we require to worry too much about the heritage and authenticity of the contents of this Extra Vintage rum.
The more established distilleries use labels such as XO because they cannot guarantee the exact mix of rums which will be used in every batch of rum produced. Each cask will be different and the ability in making rum uniform comes in the shape of the master blender.
The master blender at Mount Gay is in the shape of Allen Smith who has been with the distillery over 20 years. Again this adds a guarantee as to what you will obtain in the glass.
Mount Same-sex attracted have recently re-branded their bottles and introduced a few new lines in the shape of Shadowy Barrel and a several limited
Mount Gay XO
Mount Gay XO
When I began exploring rums, Barbados Mount Gay XO was one of the first “sipping” rums I explored and studied. This rum was the work of master blender Allen Smith and a massive steppingstone in my education of the spirit. During , we saw the company get purchased by Remy Cointreau, and many people wondered how the brand would modify. In , Mr. Smith retired, and Trudiann Branker took over as the company’s master blender, becoming the first woman to contain the title in the island’s history of rum performance. One of the first rums I was aware she had changed was Mount Gay XO, and I was curious to spot how well it held up to the original fuse that was such an essential part of my rum foundation. The modern version of XO is a merge of copper pot and column still rums that are aged between 5 and 17 years in ex-bourbon, American whiskey, and cognac casks. The rum is blended to 43% ABV using water from the estate’s well and bottled on the island for distribution.
Appearance
I'm not gonna kid ya. Mount Gay Extra Senior stands alone among reasonably affordable rums. At $32 it's approaching the top of that fair range, but it is worth every single penny. It needs to be the first rum you buy, and the one to which you refer in later tastings. It's the rum you pull out when someone asks "What does rum appetite like?". It is a genuine rum - classic, complex, remarkable and worthy. Let's review it:

Me:On my nosing the first aroma is like that of a fine wooden cabinet. Inky cherry. A leather chair. Nutty vanilla appears. A bit of nutmeg, a touch of citrus. Spice and clove. And caramel. Even a touch of maple syrup. Like all better rums, the taste is consistent and I pick up almond, just a touch of orange, clove and the black cherry. The MGXO is buttery with a medium heavy body. Heavenly. But I can't say enough about the finish which reflects the aroma and is simply unending! This more than anything is what brings me back and makes me want more.
One of my lasting memories was after my early tastin
