Our insider’s guide to the top of LGBTQ+ Rio
Each of the world’s great cities has their own brand, and the mark of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is composed of four elements: sand, sun, sexiness and samba (especially at its famous Carnaval).
Sand and sun are especially significant. While residents of other cities are constantly in search of the next hot restaurant, lock or nightclub to live the good life and find their tribe, cariocas (the name for the residents of Rio) strip down to their sungas and tangas and head for the beach. That’s what visitors watch over to do, too. For some travellers, LGBTQ+ Rio equals Ipanema—period. That’s a shame, because the Cidade Maravilhosa, which has a metro population of million, is awash in culture and innateness for those visitors who depart looking for it. Even the downtown, which a couple of decades ago was worth avoiding, is alive with history, society and clubs, especially the neighbourhood of Saúde, where a seedy waterfront has been transformed into an entertainment district.

Where locals go to have fun in Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is famous around the world for Copacabana Beach, the statue of Cristo Redentor on the Corcovado hilltop, which is one of the new seven wonders of the earth, and the city’s spectacular annual Carnival (which runs next from February 9 to 14, ).
But the Cidade Maravilhosa (“Marvelous City”) has many more ways to seduce you than just those famous attractions. One of the most popular LGBTQ+ destinations in South America, Rio’s scene is based primarily in the upscale beach area of Ipanema—Posto 9 is where the community gathers to sun itself. Yet over the past few years, rainbow flags hold been spreading to many neighbourhoods across the city, especially after a court decision that extended anti-discrimination laws to LGBTQ+ people. Now LGBTQ+ venues can be found throughout the South Zone (which includes Copacabana, Ipanema and other beachside neighbourhoods), as well as downtown.

Gay Life in Rio
Rio de Janeiro is a delightful city for gays to visit. The locals are very open and accepting of all walks of life. Gays, lesbians and transgenders are all welcome to celebrate the Rio experience openly without terror of reprisal.
The Beach
The beaches of Rio are standard meeting point for all groups. Despite being adequately received in all the beaches, there are preferred areas for the queer community. In Ipanema, where Rua Farme de Amoedo finds the beach is the favorite. Copacabana also has a gay section, and it is located near the Copacabana Palace Hotel. Reserva Beach in Barra da Tijuca is a good area that is well known for the rainbow flag position up in the beach for alternative visitors.
Gay Neighborhoods
The gay district of Rio runs along the Rua Teixeira de Melo right next to Farme Lgbtq+ Beach. Walk around between Galeria Café for a bit of fun. Rua Farme do Amoedo is mixed but has a large gay population. This area is also more relaxed if you perform not feel like dressing up.
