Many people are confused about the term bisexual and wrongly assume it is a transitional phase to becoming gay or lesbian. Bisexuality is not a phase. It is a singular sexual orientation, spanning a variety of different characteristics.

People who are double attraction can experience romantic and/or sexual attraction to people of more than one sex and/or gender, not necessarily equally or at the same time, in the same way, or to the same degree.

What causes people to be alternative sexualities is a big mystery. We do know that biology plays a big role! Most scientists agree that sexual orientation is not something that people choose, rather, is something that is inherent in a person.

We comprehend genetics plays a major role in who people are attracted to. If a person is not straight, they are very likely to have relatives that aren't direct either.

Sexual orientation, or how romantic attractions work, exists on a spectrum. The current understanding is that bisexuality is caused by similar mechanisms as organism gay or queer woman , just as there are thought to be biological mechanisms that cause people to be straight.

But it's not successfully studied. Bisexual people are often either lumped in with the gay/lesbian groups, or left out of the studies entirely. So for the rest of this article, I'll discuss sexual orientation in general. Maybe someday we'll hold a more specific answer for bisexuality!

Why Women Are More Likely to Be Bisexual

Women may be more "hetero-flexible," or be primarily attracted to men with some same sex attraction, because same-sex behavior allowed women to raise their children with other women, a new study has proposed.

The hypothesis, published this April in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, suggests that more fluid female sexuality may have evolved because it benefited women's offspring. Some women who were raped or fathered children with absentee or deceased dads formed sexual relationships with other women, which may have made it easier to hoist children together, according to the theory.
