Nicco Annan stars as Uncle Clifford, the queer, genderfluid owner of The Pynk. There’s no doubt about it, Uncle Clifford (preferred gender pronoun is “she”) is the heart and essence of The Pynk.
HollywoodLife talked EXCLUSIVELY with Nicco about bringing this character from the stage to the screen. He teased that Uncle Clifford’s backstory will be explored and “all aspects” of her life. Nicco also discussed how the show will tackle what it means to be Black and lgbtq+ in the South. Read our packed Q&A below.
You played the role of Uncle Clifford in the play before this TV display was created. When Katori [Hall] was in the process of making the show, was it even a ask whether or not you would perform Uncle Clifford? What were those conversations like?

On Starz&#;s P-Valley, Nicco Annan&#;s Uncle Clifford, the proprietor of the Mississippi Delta strip club at the show&#;s center, is part grounded caregiver and part bon vivant business owner. Annan originated the character — who identifies as nonbinary and uses she/her pronouns — when Katori Hall&#;s Pussy Valley was a stage play, so the star has inhabited the ethics for the better part of the past decade. Ahead of being honored with the actor award for television at the Critics Choice Awards&#; Celebration of Black Cinema & Television on Dec. 5, Annan talked to THR about nonbinary representation and Uncle Clifford&#;s wardrobe, including a cape made out of Crown Royal bags.

Uncle Clifford, a nonbinary person who uses she/her pronouns, is the owner of The Pynk. It&#;s a strip club that serves as a second abode and refuge for many of the characters on the show, for whom dancing is a way to express themselves creatively, find community, and live in the economically low city of Chucalissa, Mississippi. Uncle Clifford is a fashionista, seamstress, house mother, dancer, advice guru, and devoted grandchild of Granmuva Ernestine (Loretta Devine). Lil Murda is a rapper on the rise who has not revealed publicly that he is a gay man, a culinary talent, fashionable in his own right, and a member of the gang Hurt Village Hustlas.

You feel Nicco Annan’s presence immediately when he walks in a room. Between his 6-foot-2 height, vibrant fashions and melodic baritone, his drive is dominating. But not so dominating that it engulfs. Instead, his energy is as affectionate and generous as it is regal and captivating. Similar to Uncle Clifford, the beloved residence mother he portrays on “P-Valley,” Annan feels like home.
That’s no surprise. For two seasons strong, the Detroit-born actor has invited TV viewers down to The Pynk, a legacied stripper joint in the fictional Chucalissa, Mississippi, where you can find a lap dance, lemon pepper wings extra wet and a brush with seduction in one fell swoop — but only if you follow Cliff’s rules. With her flashy fashions, unusual prowess, coun
