Gay shame book

Publisher Description

Only a not many years ago, it seemed that the fight for homosexual rights was won in the UK: legal equality was achieved, prejudice rapidly dying out. Mission accomplished, right?

Wrong, argues Gareth Roberts. Homophobia is making a major comeback under the guise of the ideology of 'gender identity'. The enforcers of this new creed assert that attraction to people of the same sex is 'hateful'. They quarrel that effeminate men and butch women can't just be gay, but must 'really' be gender non-conforming. Worse, this ideology has colonised the gay rights movement, capturing institutions prefer Stonewall and the gay press completely. Anyone who disagrees risks professional suicide.

So what happened to the funny, grown-up culture, truth-telling and knowing irony of gay men? How and why was the older lgbtq+ rights activism, which gifted such progress to homosexual people, hijacked?

In this warm, witty polemic, Gareth Roberts answers these questions and argues that we require a new male lover liberation movement.

Gay Shame

Ever since the Stonewall Riots, &#;gay pride&#; has been the rallying sob of the gay rights movement and the political force behind the emergence of the field of lesbian and gay studies. But has something been lost, forgotten, or buried beneath the drive to transform homosexuality from a perversion to a pleased social identity? Have the political requirements of queer pride repressed discussion of the more uncomfortable or undignified aspects of homosexuality?

Gay Shame seeks to lift this unofficial disallow on the investigation of homosexuality and shame by presenting critical work from the most vibrant frontier in contemporary queer studies. An esteemed list of contributors tackles a range of issues&#;questions of feeling, disreputable sexual histories, dissident gender identities, and embarrassing figures and moments in gay history&#;as they investigate the possibility of reclaiming shame as a novel, even productive, way to examine lesbian and homosexual culture.

&#;

Accompanied by a DVD collection of films, performances, and archival imagery, Gay Shame constitutes nothing less

Some say ‘We have equality in Britain, we’ve got to the point where the vast majority couldn’t give a fig whether we’re gay or not. As such, I really don’t yearn my sexual orientation to specify me: it’s just not essential . Gay Pride makes such a fuss, what’s the point?’. They see their sexuality to be little more important to them than their hair colour or biscuit preference and find Homosexual Pride to be at optimal irrelevant, at worst very irritating. They don’t want to be ‘queer’ or ‘radical’, they wish the right to be attracted to their own sex while being as dull as the rest of us. That seems fair enough to me. Surely getting to such a show was the purpose of the gay rights movement?

Others are less sanguine, though not for the reasons that you’d necessarily await. They worry about gay rights being lumped in with a lot of other political claims that they are, to position it mildly, sceptical about. Some have begun to n
