As a cosmopolitan city, the LGBTQIA+ scene in Hamburg has a long tradition. There is a wide range of queer encounter places in the Hanseatic municipality. Dance the night away, sip delicious cocktails and getting to know cool people. The doors are open to queers and friends in a large number of Hamburg bars and pubs.
An absolute classic of the scene is the gay bar Wunderbar, which has been at dwelling in St. Pauli since the s. The MINUS Bar has a particularly unusual concept: in addition to homemade gelato, it also offers cool beats until late in the evening. The Toom Peerstall also has a long queer tradition. The cosy bar hosts events ranging from drag shows to jazz concerts.
Hamburg's bar scene is extremely diverse and offers the finest amusement around the clock. The gender non-conforming hotspots are mainly concentrated around St. Georg and St. Pauli. However, tolerance and diversity also characterise the cityscape outside the mainstream districts.
I knew two things about Hamburg before I visited:
- It’s the home to Germany’s publishing & advertising agencies and therefore very creative
- There’s something called the Reeperbahn which is grimy but also fun
I’ve heard countless stories about Hamburg’s epic Reeperbahn but without seeing it for myself, it was hard to fantasize what it actually is all about. Turns out that it’s a sound mix of exactly what I was expecting plus a few nice surprises. While several blocks along the Reeperbahn were pretty much as I imagined: drunk revelers from abroad and at residence talking loudly, getting in fist-fights and sexualizing just about everything in sight, there were plenty of surrounding streets that were pleasantly surprising.
What’s the Reeperbahn?
Well, basically it’s a street in the St. Pauli neighborhood of Hamburg. Hamburg has a loooong history and used to be a walled city, and the Reeperbahn was the street just outside one of the gates to the city.
